CONTEXT in collaboration with CM+ was involved from concept design through to construction for this important piece of ‘green’ infrastructure along the Pacific Highway. The project comprises an upgrade of the 17km section of the Pacific Highway between Tintenbar to Ewingsdale in the Northern Rivers Region of NSW, to a four lane divided carriageway to motorway standards; and traverses highly scenic coastal and pastoral landscapes with significant agricultural, tourism and community values.
The visual, social, cultural and environmental significance of the region has been of utmost importance in the development and refinement of the urban and landscape design. Key elements of the project include three major interchanges, seven twin bridges over creeks, existing roads and railway lines, two feature bridges over the Pacific Highway, major earthworks, a noise wall and a 440 metre long tunnel exterior and interior design. Significant work has been done to integrate the earthworks into the surrounding environment, which has involved detailed design development with the geotech team.
The key challenge has been to come up with innovative landscape solutions, through an iterative problem solving approach, and identification of alternate effective landscape design measures.
