Campbell's Cove Promenade
Location Circular Quay, NSW
Client Property NSW
Project duration 2017 - Present
CONTEXT has prepared the detailed design and documentation for a state significant upgrade to the historic Circular Quay waterfront at Campbell’s Cove stretching between the Overseas Passenger Terminal to the Hyatt Hotel in Sydney CBD.
Involving multiple stakeholders and the management of sub-consultants including lighting designers, heritage experts, civil, structural and service engineers, the project comprised of designs for an improved and more inviting public domain space forming part of Sydney’s “Cultural Ribbon”.
The levels of the promenade have been lowered in some areas up to one metre to restore the relationship of the Historic Campbell’s Stores building to the harbour, and the complex vehicle movements required during cruise ship berthing have been seamlessly integrated into the public square. A greater sense of arrival and equitable access has been vastly improved and stone paving treatments include interpretation of the original shoreline.
The project required the retention of a large existing Fig Tree with improvements to its growing conditions, and the translocation of eight existing mature Cabbage Tree Palms to new locations on the promenade.
