Ultimo Pop Up School

Location Ultimo, NSW
Client Department of Education
Project Phase Concept - Construction
Project Duration 2016 - 2018

CONTEXT in-conjunction with TKD Architects were engaged by the Department of Education to develop a temporary school to cater for 350 pupils as the permanent school underwent construction.

The southern portion of Wentworth Park sitting adjacent to the permanent school campus was identified as the pop up school location. The large existing trees on-site directed the landscape approach with a raised, expansive terraced deck proposed to protect the trees and connect the 18 home-bases, administration, library, hall and canteen.

Large synthetic turf areas break up the expanse of decking and cater for an array of passive and active spaces, school assemblies and gatherings. The large, central, synthetic lawn will encourage informal and active play for the out-going student whilst the canopy-shaded outer edges provide quieter zones for the reserved student. This edge treatment will include seating, amphitheatre, sports court and wall ball. The perimeter landscape will soften the architecture and provide a comfortable microclimate to sit and relax within.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian unveiled the temporary school ahead of the 2018 school term stating it had been ‘cleverly designed’ to fit into one of the city’s most densely populated suburbs.
